Immediately the reassuring response of yapping hounds rolled through the night, and, guided by the dogs' barks, Austill reached the fort. He was let into the stockade by John Eades, who invited him to supper and saw that his horse was cared for. As he ate, Austill told of his mission and of his lonely ride. No one listened more intently to the telling than did Margaret, Eades' darkhaired young daughter. She wanted to ask questions, wanted to praise Jere for his bravery wanted to plead with him to be vigilant, but she was too shy to speak.

Hodges stretched out on her couch to take a little nap right after dinner (midday dinner). Thanksgiving was over, and she had a lot to do to get ready for Christmas, which would be coming before she knew it, but she had a cold and thought a rest might make her feel better. Mrs. Hodges had just relaxed real good there on the couch, was dozing off, when all of a sudden she heard an awful noise and something hit her left arm and hip. She opened her eyes, which might be termed a natural reaction, and saw a good size hole in the ceiling and in the roof above the couch.

We had a little excitement here today," Mrs. Hodges told him. He had already sensed that. Then she got right to the point. " That was a shocker! She showed him the hole in the roof and the damaged radio and the bruises on her arm, and she told him all about how it happened, beginning with when she lay down on the couch to take a nap. Mr. Hodges looked and he listened. Then he asked, "Where is it? " It was a natural question. "I want to see it," he said. That was a natural thing, too. Well, the chunk of meteor wasn't at the Hodges' house.
