Through the shades, we could see my father watching TV in a first-floor room. My bedroom was on the second floor. We figured if AMERICAN SON 47 we could just get there, we could claim in the morning that we had been there all along. There were pillars in front of the house that served as supports for the balcony off my bedroom. I pulled a chair over, got on it, and strained to reach the balcony’s railing. The combination of being drunk and standing on a rickety chair left me about as steady as a fighter getting up from his third knockdown.

That never failed to amuse my classmates, who loved to make fun of poor Oscar. If you had told them I’d be known as the Golden Boy someday, they would have laughed even harder. At the end of summer, when all the stores had back-to-school promotions, I might get a notebook and some pencils. That was about it. Because money was tight, my parents never took us shopping for clothes. I had only one pair of jeans and I just kept wearing them and wearing them until I got sick of them and sick of my friends pointing at them and grabbing their stomachs in laughter.

He didn’t speak in a loud or abrasive manner. I thanked him, figured he was a fan with a lot of money, and went back to my table. As I sat down, my friends started whispering, “Do you know who that is? That’s the Mexican Mafia. ” Having heard of them, I became scared. The blonde wouldn’t leave, choosing instead to hang next to me. And the drinks kept AMERICAN SON 51 coming, ordered courtesy of that other table. I felt pressure. Even when I went to the restroom, I felt they were watching me. Sure enough, when I glanced over at that table, several guys were staring at me.
