Djuna Barnes was a short-story writer, poet, playwright, newspaperwoman, theater columnist, portrait painter, and illustrator of her own work. Her work was not voluminous, but she has been called "a writer's writer," as if to explain why she is more revered than read. Barnes is best known for Nightwood (1936), a daring and complex poetic novel for which T. S. Eliot wrote the introduction. The difficulty of her prose, which depends upon thematic juxtaposition rather than chronological plot, as well as her black humor, fascination with the decadent, and frank discussion of female sexuality, has kept her outside the American literary mainstream.
