Carl Whitaker in Tennessee was developing with colleagues a psychotherapy of chronic schizophrenic patients. Lyman Wynne and colleagues were developing ideas about pseudomutuality in the family relationships of schizophrenics. Murray Bowen in Washington proposed an approach to schizophrenic families based on the idea of emotional divorce between members. Theodore Lidz in Baltimore was looking at ‘marital schism’ and schizophrenia. Ronald Laing in England was proposing that schizophrenic family members were the most sane members of a family system.
