The assay-spectrographic method is considered the most common of the composite methods with lead, silver, copper, and Cu-Ni alloys as collectors. He stated that the silver assay bead can be converted into a Cu-Ag alloy for determination of ruthenium and iridium. Ion exchange, extraction, and coprecipitation were mentioned as being promising chemical preconcentration methods. Berenshtein et al. (46) and Livshits (47) reported improved methods for assay-spectrographic determination of platinum, palladium, rhodium, and gold in ores and rocks.

0% of rhodium. Gerlach and Schweitzer (96) were working on the spectrographic analysis of the platinum metals in 1929 when they discovered the principle of homologous lines. This laid the foundation for the internal standard method which first allowed accurate quantitative spectrochemical analysis. In 1931 Gerlach and Ruthardt (97) published lists of the most sensitive lines of various impurity elements, including platinum metals, in platinum, iridium, and rhodium. Gerlach and Reidl (98) described spectrographic and electrical experi ments on " p u r e " platinum in 1933.

After mixing the powder with graphite powder, he vaporized it completely from a cratered electrode. Kuranov (123) described a method somewhat similar to these for determining the impurities in iridium and rhodium. In 1962, Lincoln and Kohler (124) published a comprehensive method for the spectrographic analysis of high purity platinum. 48 2 SPECTROCHEMICAL A N A L Y S I S OF T H E P L A T I N U M METALS Gut'ko et al. (125), in 1963, analyzed refined osmium for some 15 impurity elements by evaporating most of the osmium as the tetroxide and mixing the residue with graphite powder.
