Before the Republicans, several other parties appeared fleetingly in the Northeast and Midwest to advocate prohibition of liquor, anti-Catholic legislation, and measures to prevent the spread of slavery.

If enfranchised black men were guilty of rape, Republican officials were the surrogate rapists. Perhaps the most revealing aspect of this argument was the conflation of rape and consensual sexual relations. In Democratic rhetoric white women were often victims who resisted black men's aggression, but at other times they appeared as willing partners. Invoking what one Republican called "the bugbear of amalgamation," Democrats also ignored relations between black women and white men, whether consensual or not.

Most seem to have rejected the central tenet of domestic ideology, that women's virtue gave them a moral authority to which men should defer.
