Molte delle sue conquiste sono meglio comprese e apprezzate oggi che in passato.

Serve anche (anzi il più delle volte) ad attribuire una caratteristica a qualcosa. È vero che la generosità e Tom sono due cose (ovviamente due cose di tipi o categorie differenti), ma «Tom è generoso» non dice che queste due cose diverse sono identiche. Dice che Tom possiede la generosità, non che Tom è la generosità. È precisamente questo il ruolo che nel linguaggio hanno espressioni come «è generoso» di contro a espressioni come «è la generosità». Pertanto Aristotele, attraverso le distinzioni e la descrizione, realizza il suo progetto, esplicitando ciò che nell'uso comune del linguaggio è implicito.
